Hermann sighed as he glanced down to see the dregs of his wine languishing in the parabolic recess at the bottom of his glass. He set it down with the attentiveness of a man who had just gotten quite carefully drunk. His companion's glass, now beside his own, was also empty. Like the chair opposite him which she had so recently occupied. The bottle, tipped over on the floor, was empty.

He picked up and thumbed through one of the books she'd left behind, first caressing the spine and enjoying the aroma of the dated pages as they fell past his thumb. He couldn't read the words. It didn't matter; he knew them all already.

Replacing the book, his gaze sought the distraction of the brightly lit river in the distance, a fat contrast to the dolorous gloom that permeated his seventh floor hotel room, and quite nicely matched his mood. The church steeple pierced the setting beam of sunlight that cast its rays on the far bank of the river, and the whole of the small town could be seen to settle into its comfortable evening routine. Hermann counted two sheriff's patrol cars, one dirty school bus and an ambulance backing into its bay at Fire Station Number One.

He wanted more wine.

He picked up the same book again, this time only turning open the cover to read the inscription. A woman's name, six words it had taken him two hours to write, and his own carefully etched signature. He traced a circle with his finger around the words, not daring to touch any of them. As he closed the book a painfully ironic smile tugged at the corners of his lips, though it never reached his eyes. He still meant them.

Snapping the cover closed, he came to a decision. He stood up smoothly and remained poised steadily on his feet. He was sort of proud of that. A last glance back at the nearly touching wine glasses and he retrieved his wallet from the bedside table. There was a liquor store around the corner from the hotel and he needed the fresh air rather than dialing for room service. Maybe he'd pick up some whiskey too.

Slipping on his shoes, he paused as he reached for his coat. She hadn't let the door close all the way behind her when she left. Hermann hadn't noticed that. Snatching his coat from the closet, he hurried out.

Nice pic, MG. Looks like a Bed and Breakfast somewhere.

Good story, Simon. I'm still waiting for your first online fiction (besides the delightful snippets you provide in various comments sections).

The Story - This was our room when Moonshot and I escaped from Norah for a day or so back in March. Hermann, MO is a quaint little river town with four or five excellent wineries and fabulous B&Bs. You can just barely make out the Missouri River in the background.

Simon - Good guess on the Hermann in the photo title. They say a picture is worth 1000 words...and you've clearly taken that heart ;)

I wish the truth was as deep or as engaging as you imagined it. Your version is far more poetic. I love some of the phrasing you use here.

The owners did bring homemade cookies and icecream with a locally made Raspberry Port Chocolate sause by to the room each night...and that was very poetic. But it's not in the photo...so it doesn't count ;)

Mark - Good guess. And I agree...Simon owes us fiction, dammit!!

Oh, I could spend hours - the whole day, sitting there. Relaxing and enjoying the view - lovely lovely shot. Nice place for a getaway! Happy WW! Thanks for visiting and I loved your 'caption' for my Lemur shot! Cheers!

I thought I posted a comment this morning. Guess it didn't take...oh well.

I really like this shot. And I really like Hermann too. We'll have to keep it in mind if/when we get away for a weekend.

Nice shot Moksha! I was thinking perhaps it was in Eureka Springs for a bit until I read on down! Looks like a pleasant place to spend some time.

I'll consider the fiction thing.

Maybe what I really need is an outside catalyst to create the spark of inspiration. In much the same way that the picture for this week's WW made me ask, "Who is looking out this window and what is he thinking?", I need to be provided with a problem statement that I wouldn't have come up with on my own and yet is sufficient to provide impetus for me to dream up a resolution.

Robert Jordan once said that the thought occurred to him one day, what if you woke to the realisation that the fate of the world rested on your shoulders? And so was born his (interminable) Wheel of Time series.

Moksha, Mark: you are so charged.

And hey!!

Where the heck's the story you've been working on, huh?

Quid pro quo, my friend.
