A Serious Lack of Lasers
“Seriously,” I said, “which is more exciting: Jane Austen, or Jane Austen getting shot by a laser?”
“I can think of someone else I’d like to see shot with a laser,” she mumbled as she put “Becoming Jane” into the DVD player, ignoring my claim to the superiority of sci-fi to chick flicks.

“What did you think?” she asked as the credits rolled.
“It suffered from a serious lack of lasers,” I replied.
“True,” she reasoned, “but the same could be said of the whole 18th century.”

As a fan of chick flicks AND sci-fi, I don't know where I stand on this issue. But it's good to see you posting again, Gren.
And this is a good thing to remember for any literary endeavour: dialogue is FUN to read, always. I don't know what it is about people talking that attracts the eye away from paragraphs of descriptions in novels... of course, all the flashy punctuation factors in.
Anyway... yay, dialogue!

Emilie - Truth be told, I actually have no problem with chick flicks...and my lovely wife has no problem with sci-fi. This is really just all a part of a wonderfully ritualized bickering that we love so much. Like the way I begged to buy a snow blower for two years...hoping against all hope that she would never relent. Cuz...I mean...we just really didn't need a snow blower. Mainly, I just wanted to post this becasue her final comment struck me as terribly witty. And I like sharing my wife's wit with the world.
And yes, hurray dialogue. And hurray for distant friends who show up even though I haven't posted in over two months.

I also really like shared conversational type posts. They're quick, normally (hopefully) witty, and instantly personalised.
Having met her, I can attest to Moonshot's general wittiness, and her need to be so imbued because of the husband she has.
I think it might still be accurate to say that even the 21st century suffers from a relative paucity of lasers. At least the really cool kind, you know?
Si - Yeah, I've had a couple little snippets like this one that I thought I could post. But it always feels like I shoul dpost something of consequence after such a long break. This time I just figured sumthin was better than nuthin and posted anyway. But, it's also true that I really enjoy these little conversation posts. Yours always make me laugh so I need to get used to posting them more often.
And as much as this century may continue this dirth of lasers...Miss Austen's century was even more so. But then, I suppose I should take some comfort in the fact that she didn't know what she was missing. We on the other hand, here on the precipice of lasery goodness, are forced to dream and reach in futility.
"Dirth." That's so cute. And so Moksha.
But, it does appear in the same comment as "lasery goodness," so I suppose there's some literary leeway there.

I dig both, when done right. When done badly, both can be very, very bad.
If anyone ever made a movie with zombies and lasers, you two would have the perfect movie for both your tastes.
Mark - Oddly, lasers and zombies are not things I really like together. Two great tastes that make each other taste a little weird together. Moonshot and I are both sorta purists in this sense. Zombies just call out for low tech solutions: ax handles, shotguns, samurai swords...that sort of thing. But, if you ever want to write a story with both zoombies and lasers to prove me wrong in this theory...I look forward to it.
Resident Evil 1 (and maybe 2) had some lasers, and a lot of zombies, and it was good enough, imho. Of course, the laser part probably didn't meet expectations - what I remember was mostly a scene riped off from the movie Cube.
